Australia routs India 8-0 to win gold

Jason Wilson and Luke Doerner scored two goals apiece as world champion Australia thashed India 8-0 to win its fourth successive Commonwealth Games men's field hockey gold. Indian National Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh were among a capacity crowd of 19,000 at the MDC Stadium, but they had little to cheer their home team.

Earlier, New Zealand defeated European champion England 5-3 on penalty strokes to clinch bronze medal after both teams were level at 3-3 in regulation time and the extra time could not produce a golden goal.

Delhi has delivered, says CGF chief Michael Fennell

India wins 37th gold

Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa upset top-seeded Singapore's Yao Lei and Sari Shinta Mulia 21-16, 21-19 to win gold in badminton women's doubles.

Musical treat at CWG closing ceremony

India hopes to end on high medal note eyeing 100 medals. India is locked in a close race with England for the second spot in the overall medal count.

With three gold and four bronze — India turned in its best performance at the Commonwealth Games. Never before had they won more than a gold in an edition.

Inquiry into empty stands and rainbow Gaymes

Finally Mike Fennell, the CWG chief has ordered an inquiry into the 'missing spectators' debacle and wants to know by Sunday, where all the tickets are.

The lame excuse being given is that a number of tickets were actually 'complimentary tickets' for corporates and they haven't turned up! But actually many TV cameras caught people outside the venues selling tickets in black. In one such expose it was revealed that the tickets being sold were actually not even proper tickets, but sample tickets!

Meanwhile, ive heard a number of people say they tried to go to see some event, but were turned away, being told that there are no tickets and its 'housefull' inside.
Also a couple of my friends have been trying unsuccesfully to book tickets for the swimming diving events in which Mathew Mitcham, the only Out gay athlete is participating. The 22 year old represents England and has quite a fan following.

Unfortunately all tickets are sold out for his event on Sunday, now there were only few tickets for tuesday and two for wednesday available a little while ago. Even though the press has reported that the swimming stadium will come alive with rainbow colors as the LGBT community will come to support Mitcham. Sorry, there would be no such spectacle....thanks to Fennell and co, there are no tickets for us to go enmasse! Going in twos or threes wont be the same.

But these games are supposed to be most Gay friendly as rainbow colors seem to have been adopted by the OC. Secondly, the very slogan of the games 'Come OUT and PLAY', might be encouraging all those in the closet!

Jamaica's Clarke fastest man of Delhi 2010

Jamaican Leron Clarke became the fastest man of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi clocking the second quickest time of 10.12 seconds on Indian soil.

Clarke led the eight-man field from the beginning after being the third fastest to kick out of the block and he eased through the finishing line with his hands raised.

His 10.12 s effort was a tad less than his season's best of 10.10s and also below his personal best of 9.99 s.

Englishman Mark Lewis Francis, who won a Silver in the European Championships, was second with a timing of 10.2 s while Trinidad and Tobago's Aaron Armstrong was third with 10.24 s.

India beat England 3-0 in Badminton, assured of Silver

P Kashyap pulled off an incredible win over higher-ranked Rajiv Ouseph as India avenged a four-year-old semifinal loss to England, thrashing the visitors 3-0 to assure themselves of a silver in the team badminton event.

World number 32 Kashyap, who was chosen to play the men's singles over 17th ranked Chetan at the eleventh hour, rose to the occasion and notched up a thrilling straight-game win over 16th ranked Ouseph to help India set up a summit clash with Malaysia here tomorrow.

The mixed doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and V Diju gave India a 1-0 lead with a brilliant 21-17 21-17 win over Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork in the first tie to set the ball rolling before Kashyap thrashed Ouseph 21-13 21-17 to extend India's lead.

Inclusive Commonwealth Games

Commonwealth games for the paraplegic athletes is also being conducted along with rest of the events. It was in 2002 at Manchester for the first time that games for athletes with a disability were conducted for the first time. This is perhaps the best example of Inclusion of Persons with a Disability (PWDs) into society.

Para games are being held in 15 events at Delhi 2010. Since awarding Delhi the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the Commonwealth games Federation and International Paralympics Committee (IPC) have established a list of 4 core Para-Sports: Athletics, Lawn Bowls, Powerlifting and Swimming.

I got a first hand feel of this Inclusion at Ahmedabad while interacting with a few girls with a physical disability while doing research for my film on Inclusion “Hamare Saath Chalon”. The Girls were training for the women’s wheelchair table tennis event of the CWG2010 at the Blind People’s Association centre. Their enthusiasm knew no bounds as they displayed their skills picking up difficult serves and smashing the ball across. One day perhaps they would even compete in the open category!

Infact having paralympics is one of the core activities of many organizations working with PWDs. For example Amarjyoti Charitable Trust which runs Inclusive schools and medical facilities for PWDs at Delhi and Gwalior. They even organize and participate in this event at the national level. Sports is important for all round development of children and young adults.

But how far has the infrastructure which was built for CWG2010 been made inclusive. Can PWDs, for example those using a wheel chair or those with low vision, or even those with sight disability, can they comfortably reach inside any of the venues. In fact anyone who is not young and sturdy cannot get inside the stadia without discomfort. What with having to walk for miles to get inside because of security reasons and apparently there not being a totally barrier free environment at any of venues, I don’t think any PWDs or even senior citizens, pregnant women and children can get access easily to these world class venues.

In fact our society is hardly barrier free (atleast in India) the hi tech infrstructure being built in the metro cities actually caters to only 10 per cent of the total population. This is because only 10 percent consists of the young and healthy. Anyone well into their 30s is categorised as a person with reduced mobility and will join the rest 90 percent, who find climbing stairs a uphill task or reading signage a problem because of blurred vision, many may even find such large structures like stadiums, Shopping malls, airports etc as disorienting.

PWDs dream of a society where they would be able to have access to a totally barrier free environment and move around unaided, and lead independent and fulfilling lives. This would go a long way in including 90 percent of our population and ensuring no one gets left out!

Delhi gets Gold from CWG 210

Delhiites are the clear winners. What with smooth traffic on the roads where there are no CWG lanes. It’s after ages that we see such empty roads in South Delhi, where a lot of sporting venues are situated.
Thanks to all the preparations for the CWG considerable efforts have been made to remove blocks on roads to ensure smooth traffic flow. Also, the newly introduced Metro stations have shaken this part of Delhi from its slumber as commuters are seen tumbling out of pavements (from underground Metro stations) spilling out on the roads and huddling together at the entrances.

This is the Gold medal for Delhi from CWG 2010

Delhi sports a very clean look, with all schools and colleges being shut, driving around is a pleasure and on the roads with CWG traffic lanes, it’s an adventure!

Heard about the total lack of interest in Delhiites as far as being spectators after the opening ceremony. The CWG bosses are upset as there is NO ONE to see the athletes in action. Kalmadi it seems has promised to give out free tickets to school children and to people from ‘lower strata’ of society to fill in the venues. How conceited can officials be. As if the so called lower strata can cover up for your misdeeds.

How could have Delhiites become interested in actually seeing the games first of all, with no information about how and where to get tickets from. Also, in Delhi everyone believes that tickets for such events can only be available if you ‘know’ someone influential! Also, with such heavy security around the Stadia, it seems an uphill task to go and watch a sport.

Kalmadi says tickets will be sold at the venues now since people have been unable to get to the tickets. So, where else was he thinking of selling them in the first place!

Indian wrestler Ravinder Kumar bags Gold

Indian wrestler Ravinder Kumar bagged gold in the Greco-Roman 60kg event after he beat Terence Christopher Bosson of England 2-0, 5-0 on Tuesday.

Delhi takes games in its stride!

Atlast, a day after the CWG stunned the world with a spectacular and flawless opening ceremony, Delhiites have taken the games in their stride. The adverse publicity emanating from New Delhi till now was perhaps indicating that the people have not yet embraced the Games!

But now, they are walking around proud of the feat accomplised last night. Common people on street corners were heard inquiring from each other if they 'saw' the ceremony! 'Kamal kar diya' (They have done something wonderful)

Meanwhile, traffic restrictions have been tightened, but people are taking it sportingly even if they have to drive a few extra blocks, especially around the stadium.

There are is a heavy presence of 'reminders' that they have to be on their best behaviour, what with the huge red buses with sportsmen and women rushing around on the Delhi roads. Some sportsmen are even seen practising in grounds which are spread all across the city, so in a day everyone who steps out of their homes can see some or the other of such reminders.

News Live

This channel newsxlive - says their reporters are 'close' to the stadium! Strengthens my suspicion voiced earlier about where did all the passes for the media go, if these journalists couldnt get in!

Anyway, it was a spectacular ceremony, reminding one of school annual days, with traditional folk dances from each and every state...ofcourse here they were delivered with much finesse accompanied by glitzy gadgetry and special affects!

President Pratibha Patil and Prince Charles both inaugurated the Games.

The England team stood out as they wore comfortable India inspired Nehru Jackets.

A R Rahman rounded off the 3 hour show with his CWG anthem and then after that 'Jai Ho' his oscar winning song, which predictibly electrified the audience and ended the ceremony on a 'high' note!

The Indian Contingent

The mammoth Indian contigent got a rousing welcome, as they walked into the arena dressed elegantly in red and gold. The contingent was led by Olympic shooter Gold medalist Abhinav Bindra. India is hoping to be No 2 in the overall tally!
There are a total of 600 athletes representing India!
The commentator says India hopes to do best in Shooting, wrestling and weightlifting! All of them extremely aggressive and attacking sports. But essentially Indians are anything but attackers!

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony has just begun and is spectacularly colorful…..a mixture of colors of blue and purple against the night sky. A welcome song by Hariharan with school children forming a grand ‘Namaste’ on the JLN stadium grounds and later painting feet and hands with ‘Mehendi’ Hena on giant pieces of white cloth.

People inside the stadium are screaming and clapping and it seems to have begun on the right note! The contingents of 71 countries, who made it finally, are just being led into the stadium amid loud cheers.

Delhi's quiet just before the Opening!

JAWAHARLAL NEHRU STADIUM, THE MAIN VENUE OF 2010 CWG GAMES. THIS WAS ALSO THE MAIN STADUM DURING 1982 ASIAN GAMES AND IT HAS BEEN REFURBISHED FOR CWG

It’s very quiet in Delhi just before the Commonwealth games begin in exactly two hours from now. Delhi roads have been deserted since last night, as most markets and Malls were shut down yesterday afternoon for the weekend due to security r...easons. Most people are either glued to their TV sets or have gone for weekend holidays!

A great fall out of the CWG is that Delhi has got two new routes of the Metro railway. A new line to the main stadium was inaugurated just this morning. This line will go all the way to Faridabad. Sadly the Airport line could not be inaugurated. Its construction was given to a private company, who has now been sued for Rs 11 crore damages. Obviously it’s a big blow to India’s image that Delhi does not have a railway from the airport to the city!

The electronic media has missed out on a big opportunity for showing all the excitement and color of the games, on who are the athletes and interesting facts about the participating countries. All they were obsessed with is how snakes and m...onkeys were being found at the venues and the games village. Did not see even one program on the athletes….no wonder the games have NOT struck a cord with the general people.

The print media was slightly better but the reporting was confined to the sports pages!
I was told by the media department of the games two months ago that they had given out thousands of accreditations for reporting and couldn’t give more (to me). I wonder where is that entire media! Perhaps all the passes have gone to relatives of the officials so they can sit in press boxes and watch the games…this is a common practice…disgusting.

Well hope the ceremony is grand and befitting of a country of 1 billion plus which has so much diversity that it could take you a lifetime and you still wouldn’t have seen everything

It is heartening to see the normally recalcitrant Delhiites keeping off the CWG lane. Seems THE Games are here to stay!

The traffic police has reserved one lane on roads leading upto the stadia and commonwealth games village for buses carrying athletes, officials and Ambulances! Earlier such reservation has not worked much

Delhi is crawling with tourists, on foot and bicycles, esp in and around Dillihaat and athletes, in big red buses whizzing to the games village from the airport, being ferried after arrival at Delhi...'s brand new International Airport T3!

It's exciting, esp when ur stuck in a jam, to see them being escorted by horn blaring police jeeps.

Blue colored cars and taxis are ferrying officials, to the stadia, perhaps for last minute arrangements.

New metro routes are being inaugurated, where even there were no roads, new hotels are suddenly coming up in areas which were just vast streteches of barren land.

Everything looks very urgent and efficient! 4 days to go...i think Delhi will be overwhlmed by the day of the opening ceremony. We realise now what it means to host such a big international sporting event.

Wonder what will happen if the Olympics ever come to Delhi!
